Why are Usability Studies Important?

Are you planning a website re-design? Is your current website simply not delivering you the results you deserve?

Usability Studies are one of the most important qualitative tactics for testing, challenging and verifying your website or design prototype. Usability Studies reveal moments of user frustration or confusion, and identify potential areas for improvement through direct input from real-life users.

Our Usability Study process.

Conversion Kings have mastered a powerful skill set in Usability Testing. Our process includes defining a clear purpose of the study, recruiting the right participants, facilitating sessions in our dedicated usability lab and reporting on qualitative data for the deepest insights.

1. Scoping Usability study & identifying goals

It’s very important to understand exactly what you are testing and why you are testing it. Creating hypotheses and identifying goals ensures high quality user research output.

2. Recruiting participants

While it’s always important to create designs that are intuitive to a wide user base, the closer your designs can represent the needs of your target audience, the more they will understand implicitly. With that in mind, Conversion Kings take usability applicants through a screener process to help quickly select participants that have the characteristics of your target audience.

3. Facilitating a one-to-one lead study

The session is divided into three parts, the first being ‘ice breaker’ questions to help participants feel more relaxed and comfortable. The next stage involves hypothetical scenarios where users are guided through particular tasks that aim to reveal areas of delight and frustration. The final stage involves gathering information about the users' experiences and impressions to help validate qualitative findings.

What is a Usability Study?

A Usability Study is a method used in user-centric design in order to ascertain if the product built is convenient and easy to use. The is achieved by observing the behaviour of representative users through a number of formative or summative tasks in order to find what works and what doesn’t. Usability Researchers get customers to “think aloud” whilst observing their body language, facial expressions, and emotions. By doing so researchers can retrieve qualitative and quantitative data that will assist in identifying usability issues regarding the product.

Why are Usability Studies important?

Conducting usability tests the right way, at the right time, with the right set of people helps in reducing the risk of building the wrong product/feature/release, and therefore helps save money, time and other precious resources.

When would I need to conduct Usability Studies?

There are two key periods throughout the design process whereby Usability studies should be conducted. These two periods are known as Summative and Formative. Formative tests are conducted at the low-fidelity stage. The advantages of doing so here are designers are able to gain quick insights that will assist them in not going down the wrong path in the high fidelity phase. Summative tests are conducted in the high fidelity phase. The advantages of doing so here are designers are able to capture metrics. Here the design is able to be validated and designers are able to determine how usable a product is for release.
